Get the Facts on Later Abortion

Did you know?

  • Later abortion is a general term for abortions after the first trimester (up to 12 weeks), usually referring to abortions around 16 weeks and later.
  • ‘Late-term abortion’ is a medically inaccurate term created by anti-abortion activists.
  • In an attempt to further strip away access to abortion, anti-abortion activists are working to ban specific methods. Dilation and extraction (D&E) abortion, a safe and standard method of performing a later abortion, has been highly targeted and, in some states, is banned from use.
  • Barriers, exacerbated by anti-abortion policies like finding a provider and securing enough money for the procedure and travel, make it difficult for people seeking abortions to receive the care they want as soon as they make their decision.
  • Banning later abortion methods or setting gestational limits are medically unnecessary and interfere with the provider-patient relationship.
  • According to data from the George Tiller Memorial Abortion Fund, people seeking abortion during their second trimester travel three times farther on average than those in their first trimester.
  • Collecting enough money to cover the cost of abortion pushes people later into pregnancy. The further along you are, the more an abortion will cost. In fact, abortion care after the first trimester can range anywhere from $500 to over $10,000.

What solutions does the National Network of Abortion Funds support?

  • Increasing access to early abortion so people are able to get care as soon as they decide they want an abortion.
  • Public funding of abortion so people aren’t delayed in getting the care they need because they cannot afford it.
  • Increased access to later abortion providers.
  • Lifting of all medically-unnecessary abortion bans.
  • Advocacy for people who decide to carry their pregnancies to term to have the supports they need to raise their families in safe and healthy communities.
