Statement: What will the Gorsuch Confirmation mean for abortion access?

The Senate just confirmed a Justice who cares more about corporations than our families.

Amidst ongoing and extreme international and national violence, we are witnessing a historic moment of governmental corruption that has resulted in the confirmation of Justice Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court.

Not only is this moment tearing apart the very fabric that holds our nation together, but it will continue to destroy the lives of the people living here and around the world. Justice Gorsuch has proven that he will not side with people seeking abortions, transgender and gender nonconforming communities, people of color, workers, and immigrants. Justice Gorsuch has shown time and time again that he is willing to put the needs and desires of corporations ahead of families, science, and common sense. Now, his far right-wing stance will harm our families for a lifetime.

Yamani Hernandez, Executive Director of the National Network of Abortion Funds says:

“Justice Gorsuch will decide the outcome of cases that will impact the livelihoods of everyone around this country—including our most personal decisions and access to healthcare. President Trump vowed to place a justice on the Supreme Court with the expressed intent of overturning Roe v. Wade and ending legal abortion in over 30 states, and with Justice Gorsuch he is aiming to fulfill his promise.”

Our Supreme Court is the final defense when it comes to upholding our constitutional rights, and as we saw last year in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt, is the institution barring politicians from shuttering abortion clinics throughout a state. Today, that line of defense was irreparably harmed.

People who’ve had abortions deserve better than Justice Gorsuch. Senators who voted for him are complicit and our network will remember.
