Collective Power Fund: Redistributing Wealth for Abortion Access
August 7 2019

Announcing the Collective Power Fund: Redistributing Wealth for Abortion Access

We are moving $1,000,000 to fund abortion through the new Collective Power Fund!

Housed at the National Network of Abortion Funds, the Collective Power Fund will distribute abortion funding to 28 member organizations across more than 20 states. Funding will be concentrated on the South and Midwest, where it’s often hardest to get an abortion.

We spent the last year talking to callers, abortion funds, clinics, and other key stakeholders and learned what worked well and what could be better about how NNAF supported direct abortion funding. The Collective Power Fund is in direct response to what we learned.

We heard that funds and clinics desire a streamlined system for accessing extra money to cover the cost of an abortion in their state. We learned that people seeking support from abortion funds often cite calling their local fund as the best part of their abortion experience. Most of all, we heard the immense need for more money on the ground to pay for abortion — right now, at a time when abortion is still legal, abortion funds would need an additional $16 million to fill the current need for financial assistance.

Abortion funds are experts in helping people get their abortion. They are locally rooted. They’ve built trusted relationships with local clinics to best meet callers’ needs. That is why, with an average grant of $40,000, the Collective Power Fund will distribute $1 million to abortion funds this year to bolster their direct abortion funding budgets.

The Collective Power Fund is a means of redistributing wealth, power, and access to local abortion funds and the people who call them. It is a radical investment in community care. It’s a $1,000,000 commitment to building a future where all people have what they need to thrive.

Fund abortion. Build power.  When we think about our community of donors, these two phrases go hand-in-hand. There’s a long history in this country of framing charitable giving as something that wealthy people do to help those who are less fortunate. This year, we are moving $1,000,000 directly to NNAF members via the Collective Power Fund. In the interest of deepening our commitment to existing grantees, we will not have Collective Power Fund (CPF) applications this year and are instead renewing grants to existing CPF grantees at the same level as FY 21.
